Creating business marketing and an advertising asset with Yellow Page advertising is worth the effort to crack the code, and here are 7 reasons why.
Your business marketing and advertising also needs to factor in the
number of clients that leave your business every year, and how that affects
your profits from your marketing.
I built 3 businesses on Yellow Page advertising alone, and I was very
proud of my ability and the system I had created to “put an iron
cage around my clients”. I heard other businesses lost clients at
a rate of 20%+ per year, but I felt that certainly my client attrition
numbers must be better than that. I knew all the client retention strategies.
But in my analysis of my own business I found that I lost 19.6% of my
clients every year.
I think I found out why. When I researched statistics nationally, I found
that Americans have become more mobile than ever before. I was not losing
19.6% of my clients because they were unhappy or died. I was losing most
of them because they were moving out of my service area. The national
average on this is between 20-22% of the people in your area that you
do business with will move every year.
This is where your marketing is critical to your success and longevity.
Because if you are attracting no new clients, you’re losing 20%
of your clients every year, and you will go broke fast. If you are only
attracting 20% new clients a year, your business will plateau and fail
to grow because you are only replacing the clients you lose every year.
Your business needs to be attracting 30% new clients to grow at a modest
10% per year. And you marketing needs to automatically attract 40% new
clients to grow at a more aggressive 20% per year.
I believe it is this “hidden attrition” that causes most businesses
to fail with their business marketing and ultimately have to close their
business. But the good news is most of these “new movers”
refer to the Yellow Page advertising in their new area. So this is how
you can get the new people coming into your area that are least likely
to move.
Advertising in the Yellow Pages with a good direct marketing ad gives
you a competitive advantage over every business that mistakenly uses traditional
“Image advertising and Branding”. All Image advertising and
most Branding is totally unrealistic for small businesses and here’s
why.
Image advertising is like Coke, Nike and Target where you spend money
to establish your logo (Brand and Image) in your prospects minds. This
takes about $150 Million and 5 years to establish that Image. Then it
take about $20 Million per year to maintain that Image. Image advertising
is totally unrealistic for small business marketing because they don’t
have deep enough pockets to fund this type of marketing and advertising.
I believe the reason that most marketing and advertising agencies recommend
Image advertising is 2 fold.
My recommendation to you my friend is to vow to never place another
advertising campaign that is not direct marketing and completely trackable
so you can clearly see what’s working. Then you can increase the
advertising that is working and cancel the advertising immediately that
is failing.
This reminds me of a case history of one of my Profits Patrol Members,
Marcus Hanniman. He designed his new Yellow Page advertising for his insurance
company and ran it side-by-side with his old Yellow Page advertising as
a control. He used specific phone numbers to automatically track response
and found that his new Yellow Page ad outperformed his old one by 800%!
So now he only has to pay 12.5% of what his competition has to pay for
a new client.

in new business because it will automatically drive presold new clients
to their business year after year.
